Reader’s Response

In “The Double Edge of Globalisation”, Chanda (2007) expresses his concerns over the lack of cooperation between countries in tackling the ill effects brought about by globalisation, and advocates international cooperation on alleviating globalisation’s adverse outcomes. International cooperation might be a magic bullet solution to almost every global issue, but that will not come easy.

China for instance, is rather unwilling to take advice from western powers especially. The Opium War and the Eight Nation Alliance are just some cases which highlights the dark history China has had with these same nations that are appealing to them for help. The “Sick Man of Asia” is not going to give in that easily now that it has become a superpower. With that in mind, there are still other pressing political issues.

The “Collective Action Dilemma” is an apt description. Not everyone would cooperate even if it is mutually beneficial. Every country wants to reap the benefits of having a “healthier” world but none will willingly step up to take measures; everyone wants to be a free-rider.

Resolving these differences is never an easy task. Unless countries are able to rid of those obstacles, global cooperation will forever remain a far-fetched option.

  1. Hi Yong Cheng, this is from my group (Aisyah, Benjamin,Bennie)!,
We felt that there were good examples used to support your ideas. The structure was well organised with clear ideas. You also used an extensive range of words. Your reader response is fluent and cohesive and the conclusion is well written.

Here are some points we saw:
There should be appropriate use of reporting verbs for citing sources, for example the ‘Collective Action Dilemma’ can be cited.
What does this sentence mean? : ‘With that in mind, there are still other pressing political issues.’
The thesis can be connected more clearly with your opinion in the first paragraph.

    Enjoyed reading it! 🙂
